Tonks felt, if anything, worse than ever after the scene she made in the Hospital Wing. For one thing, it had been completely the wrong place and time for her to start arguing with Remus again. Dumbledore was dead, everyone was mourning, and who knew what was going to happen next? But also, Tonks knew Remus would be even angrier with her for airing their personal business in front of so many people. She had been way over the line.

Which was why she was now outside the door to the rooms Remus was currently occupying, having given herself a day to calm down and think about things, knocking on the door to apologize.

Molly Weasley invited her to Christmas dinner at the Burrow, and Tonks politely turned her down. She was going to spend Christmas with her parents, after all, though when Molly said that Remus was in the country and would be at the Burrow, she did hesitate. Still, she didn't want to have to meet with him in such an excruciatingly public way, much as she wanted to see him and make sure he was all right.

Fortunately, Molly obligingly informed Tonks that Remus was at number twelve, Grimmauld Place, and a plan began to take shape in her mind - he would surely be in need of food, and she was just the person to bring him some.

So it was two days before Christmas Eve when Tonks Apparated to the square. The weather was miserable, dreary, wet and cold, and she couldn't imagine inside the house would be much better. It wasn't. She clutched the food parcel to herself as she undid the wards on the front door and entered the hall. It felt so empty. It matched her mood.

She headed directly for the kitchen, but didn't say anything until she was well out of earshot of that blasted portrait.

"Remus?" she called, wondering if maybe he was asleep upstairs or something. It was a big house; she might have to search for him.

She burst unceremoniously into the Headmaster's office, using the password that every Order member had been given. Dumbledore was deep in conversation with Professors McGonagall and Snape, but she didn't care.

"Where is he? Where have you sent him?" she demanded.

McGonagall looked shocked; Snape sneered.

"Miss Tonks, I hardly think -!"

"Surely you could save the melodramatic display for a time when the Headmaster isn't -"

Dumbledore held a hand up to silence them. "I presume you are referring to Remus," he said quietly, his face impassive as ever, though there was a bit of a glint in his eye that she couldn't quite figure out. When she nodded, he continued. "I did not send him - I asked for his assistance in a task that would allow him to put his considerable and specialized expertise to good use. He left of his own free will. Did he not speak to you of his plans?"

Now Tonks had the temerity to look abashed. She could feel her ears burning a little and she glanced down at her shoes. "No, I... haven't seen much of him lately."

Dumbledore glanced at her, and now she could unmistakably read the signs of compassion in his expression, which made her even more embarrassed. "Severus, Minerva," he was saying, "Please step outside for a moment."

Snape looked as though he was about to say something else, but Dumbledore spoke again before he could. "Nymphadora is understandably worried about her friend. I hardly think she needs an audience at this time."

When the door closed behind them, Tonks shifted on her feet, feeling incredibly awkward. The few times she'd been in this office as a student, she'd been in trouble. "Can you tell me where he is?" she asked after a moment, her voice considerably less demanding.

"I'm afraid not," said Dumbledore, still looking at her as though he felt sorry for her. "I cannot tell you, because I am not precisely sure of his location myself. And if I did, it would avail us little. Surely you can see that he is far safer this way.

"However, I will tell you this: This is not the first time Remus has gone underground. He spent considerable time in the last war doing precisely what he is doing now. I will not deny that it is very dangerous, and he may be killed. It's a risk we are all taking right now, in one way or another, as you know. But if there is one thing Remus has always possessed, it is an incredible will to survive. And it is clear that he has several very good incentives to come home safely."

His look was a little too knowing, as he took in her appearance, and she could feel herself blushing again. "Headmaster, will you please let me know if - "

"Of course, should I hear news of him, I will inform you promptly." She could see a hint of a twinkle in his eyes now. "I would ask, however, that you please restrain yourself from barging in on meetings as much as possible in the future."

"Of course, sir. Sorry, sir. I'll just... let myself out then. And... Thanks."

"Remus?" The sounds of battle were everywhere, even close to the edge of the Forbidden Forest, though at least here Tonks could hear herself think.

But they'd been separated. One moment, they'd been standing back-to-back, and the next, something had come out of the corner of her eye and then he was gone, and she was desperate, almost wild to find him again.

"Remus!"

"Nymphadora, Nymphadora, gift of the nymphs... little Dora, little gift..." High, wild laughter, and a curse that Tonks was barely able to dodge, crouching behind a large tree, heart in her throat.

Bellatrix.

"Little gift," she sing-songed. "Looking for the wolf man? Too late, little girl, he's dead." Another laugh. "I saw him, he died howling like the animal he was."

Tonks flinched, stomach turning to ice, and another curse forced her to bolt for better cover.

"You were the wolf man's bitch, weren't you? Even whelped him a pup. Better come out, little gift, I'll send you back to him. Don't worry about the pup, I'll make sure your whole little pack is reunited..."

The laughter rang in Tonks' ears, and blind fury rose in her. But Bellatrix was too quick.

"Crucio!"

The pain was unimaginable. She thought she must be screaming, but she was so caught up in the pain, the fire in her bones, it was like there was nothing else in the world.

Then, suddenly, miraculously, the pain was gone. Bellatrix wasn't laughing anymore, she was screaming in pain and surprise. She'd been knocked back by a spell.

"Dora!"

"Remus!"

He's alive, he's alive, alivealivealive...

Shaking so hard she knew she wouldn't even be able to stand up yet, Tonks saw Remus move towards her. Then in the next second, Bellatrix, a look of fury on her face, raised her wand.

"AVADA KEDAVRA!"

For one brief second that seemed to last an eternity, the look of fury changed to one of surprise. Then the now-lifeless body slumped to the ground.

Tonks, shaking harder than ever, wand still pointing at the spot where Bellatrix had stood and still seeing green spots across her vision, turned her head to retch. Then, thankfully, she lost consciousness, her last sight a pair of worried brown eyes.
